The Masonic lodges in Washington, DC have a long history in the District. Federal Lodge No.1 was chartered on September 12, 1793 by the Grand Lodge of Maryland. The lodge was originally named Federal Lodge #15, but it wasn’t until 1810 when six other lodges in the District formed the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia. The Brotherhood expanded in 1825 with the addition of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge. Many illustrious names have served in these lodges and in the community from J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI from 1924-1972, to Moses Liverpool, who helped find the Bell School in 1807. The tradition of Masonic Brotherhood in Washington, DC still lives on today.
