Fort Meade became an official active Army installation in 1917. It was one of 16 cantonments built for American troops drafted during the first world war. The location of Fort Meade was selected because of its close proximity to the railroad, Baltimore, and Washington D.C. Originally, it was named Camp Meade after George Gordon Meade, whose victory at the Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the North’s triumph during the American Civil War. From its creation to the present, Fort Meade has been a key part of our country’s history.
